MOSO® launches Bamboo UltraDensity®: the unique wood solution for high traffic and semi-outdoors areas, such as in train stations

MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® represents a real revolution in the flooring sector. Indeed, it allows us to answer a growing demand: the need to install a natural, sustainable, stable, and durable flooring with an easy and reduced maintenance for high traffic buildings and places, such as train stations, airports, museums, malls, and more.

MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® flooring meets the highest requirements and certifications. It is one of the only natural products which can be installed in outdoor covered places – meaning it resists high differences in temperature and changing humidity levels. This makes MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® a unique natural solution.

The essence of UltraDensity®: the Moso bamboo plant

When focusing on bringing sustainable and environmentally friendly building materials to the construction industry, bamboo is one of the only natural solutions. The Moso bamboo plant is cultivated in China. It is a fast growing plant, with growth spurs up to one meter per day. After 5 years, the bamboo stems are mature and its density is high enough to create products such as flooring, panels, decking and much more. Unlike hardwood, the process of harvesting bamboo poles does not generate deforestation; on the contrary, it stimulates the mother plant called rhizome, allowing new shoots to grow. Bamboo stands out as the perfect natural essence to face sustainability and green building issues. The MOSO® Bamboo solid products have a negative carbon footprint (according to the research done by Pablo van der Lugt at the University of Delft in The Netherlands) and help contribute to the LEED, BREEAM and HQE certifications by reaching specific material credits.

MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® a high quality production process and a full solution

MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® flooring is a solid floor made of compressed bamboo strips at a very high density, granting it a dimensional stability (more than 1500m² installed without expansion gaps) and a hardness that surpasses any type of hardwood (including tropical hardwood).

Bamboo UltraDensity® flooring comes in the form of unfinished boards, with tongue and groove and a micro-bevel on all four sides. It is available in several thicknesses: 38, 32, 20 and 18mm; installed screwed down on sub-beams (38/32/20mm) or glued down (18mm). MOSO® Bamboo provides a complete solution: MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® sub-beams, Bamboo UltraDensity® flooring, stainless steel screws and the finishing oil WOCA nº1. Bamboo UltraDensity® is also available in stair panel form to create staircases and footbridges (2440x360x38mm).

MOSO® UltraDensity®: a uniquely certified U4P4E2C2 system, validated by ATEx nº2385 from the CSTB.

MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® flooring meets the highest certification requirements. In order to resist high traffic areas such as the SNCF train station, which welcomes up to 200 million passengers per year, the MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® complete system (flooring boards, sub-beams, screws and finishing oil) had to obtain the CSTB’s approval (French official construction institute).

Bamboo UltraDensity® heavy duty flooring

In december 2016, the MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® full system received the CSTB’s “FAVORABLE” (positive) appreciation for its ATEx (technical advice for experimental use) nº2385. This ATEx validates the use of MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® flooring in very heavy duty and high traffic public areas such as stations, airports, malls, fitness center, museums and semi-outdoor areas…

The bamboo UltraDensity® flooring and its complete solution is the only floor that has received the U4P4E2C2 certification. First, the wear layer received the use class of 41 (the highest) ; then, for hardness and indentation, UltraDensity® has a density of 1150kg/m3 and a Brinell hardness of 9.5/mm² (beyond tropical hardwood). Moreover, the durability of the boards and their low permeability assert the E2 (water resistance) classification. And finally, the flooring is chemically resistant: C2, thanks to its finishing oil, WOCA N°1.

MOSO® UltraDensity® : the only fire resistant flooring

MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® flooring has received in 2017 the highest fire resistance possible for flooring: Euroclass Bfl S1. That means the product can be used in every public building where fire constraints are the highest. Here are MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity®’s uncomparable characteristics for a natural product:

Those characteristics allow MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® flooring with its full system to be installed in outdoor open spaces, where neither heating nor air conditioning are used. The temperature and humidity variations are high, however MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® is comparable to stone in these aspects, and can resist these extreme conditions.

Two train stations to prove our expertise:

The two ongoing projects in the French train station sector illustrate the endless variety of solutions MOSO® has to offer. The SNCF (French National Railway Company) station of Bordeaux-Saint-Jean recently underwent renovations to welcome the high speed line.

In December 2016, 1 000 m² of MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity® flooring were installed on sub beams. The project management office in charge of the project chose this solution because of the technical properties of the product. Thanks to its installation method – screwed down on our sub-beams – the MOSO® flooring can be raised and installed at ground level. In the historic room, a custom-made format was installed with herringbone glue down.

The lack of expansion of the product makes it very appealing in this project as it allows the flooring to be installed continuously from indoors to covered outdoor areas. This is impossible with any other natural flooring. Its resistance to intense traffic, which is linked to the very high density of the product, is a very important and decisive factor when deciding whether to apply it in a project like this - the renovated train station of Bordeaux-Saint-Jean, which welcomes 18 millions of passengers each year.

Another iconic project we are currently working on is the Eurostar pier and the Gare du Nord’s platforms in Paris. For these projects still in progress, two types of products have been selected. UltraDensity® covers the platforms crosswise, the open area on the platforms as well as the stairs going up to the Eurostar zone. This product is the only one in parquet which suits outdoor open areas with high hygrometric and temperature amplitudes. Three other spaces of 3 000 m² in total could not withstand a flooring this thick. That is the reason why MOSO® Bamboo Supreme Density® was selected instead; it is a thinner material and perfectly adapted to these conditions.
